What the Image Rotator Does

The Image Rotator reads a single image in your browser, draws it onto a canvas, applies your chosen rotation, and exports a new image file. It is useful for phone photos, screenshots, scanned pages, and pictures that need quick alignment.

Unlike metadata-only fixes, this tool rotates the actual pixels. That means the corrected orientation is visible in apps, emails, websites, forms, and documents that ignore EXIF orientation tags.

How to Rotate an Image Online

Why Photos Sometimes Appear Sideways

Many phones save photo pixels in one orientation and store the intended viewing direction in EXIF metadata. Modern gallery apps read that metadata and show the photo correctly.

Some upload forms, email tools, PDF creators, or older viewers ignore the EXIF instruction. When that happens, the raw pixels appear sideways. Rotating the pixels directly solves that compatibility problem.

90-Degree Rotation vs Custom Angle

A 90-degree step is best for correcting sideways or upside-down photos. It changes the orientation cleanly and keeps the edges square.

A custom angle is useful for slightly tilted documents, creative effects, or alignment fixes. Because the image is tilted inside a rectangle, corner areas appear and need a background color.

Background Color for Corners

When the image is rotated by a custom angle, the canvas has empty triangular areas near the corners. White is useful for documents, black works for dark images, and a matching color helps the result blend into a design.

The background color does not recolor the photo itself. It only fills the areas outside the rotated image.

When to Use Another Tool

Use an image cropper after custom-angle rotation if you want to remove the corner areas. Use an image resizer if the original is extremely large and difficult for your browser to process.

If you only want to edit EXIF metadata without touching pixels, use a dedicated metadata tool. But if the destination ignores EXIF orientation, pixel rotation is the safer compatibility fix.
